Preamble

A little of 3 years ago, the Life Without Gluten section of this site came into being. So, 3 years down the track, how is life without gluten? Rather than subject readers to my regular lengthy prose, I will attempt to distill my observations into a few sets of bullet-points.

Please note that availabilities of various products relate to South Australia. Your Mileage May Vary.

Eating Out

  • Eating out hardest part of gluten-free living.
  • Overall, knowledge of gluten-free requirements very poor in food outlets. Action by food/hospitality industry bodies required to raise awareness?
  • When gluten-free products offered, cross-contamination with gluten-containing products often happening or at risk of happening. Handling with same tongs, fried in same oil, poor cleaning procedures leaving traces on tableware, GF products baked in areas where wheat flour dust in the air, etcetera.

Eating In

  • Sausages - Peppercorn Food Company offers Extra Lean Beef Sausage. Even to a sausage snob like myself, I rate these as quite acceptable. Available through Woolworths & others.
