Baikonur 50

The Russians won the race for space by putting the first artificial satellite (Sputnik), (non-human) animal and man into space, and it all happened from Baikonur, actually in Kazakhstan, now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

It is worth noting that Baikonur is still very busy – with the grounding of NASA's shuttle fleet, the International Space Station is fully dependent on launches from our proud demi-centenarian.
